A cholera outbreak in South Sudan has led to approximately 60 deaths and over 6,000 cases since October 28. The outbreak, primarily affecting IDP camps and refugees, is exacerbated by poor sanitation and lack of clean water. The government, alongside UN agencies, has initiated vaccination efforts while underscoring the importance of hygiene practices to combat the spread of the disease.

In South Sudan, a cholera outbreak has resulted in nearly 60 fatalities since it began on October 28, as reported by the country’s Minister of Information and Communication, Michael Makuei Lueth. Authorities revealed that over 6,000 cholera cases have been recorded, with significant concentration in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in the capital Juba, as well as in Rubkona County, Aweil, and northern refugee camps. The spread of the disease has been exacerbated among refugees fleeing Sudan due to poor sanitation and limited access to clean water. In response to the crisis, government and UN agencies have initiated vaccination efforts, though the Ministry of Health has indicated a need for additional vaccines. The health minister has urged the public to maintain cleanliness and consume only warm food to mitigate the risk of infection. This outbreak is a significant public health concern, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children under five and the elderly.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness transmitted through contaminated water and food. South Sudan has faced multiple cholera outbreaks in recent years, exacerbated by conflict, displacement, and poor infrastructure. The country is currently experiencing an influx of refugees due to instability in neighboring Sudan. As many as 880,000 individuals have fled to South Sudan since April 2023, increasing the strain on healthcare resources and sanitation systems. The current cholera outbreak has been traced back to Sudan, where a similar outbreak has already affected a large portion of the population.

The cholera outbreak in South Sudan presents a severe public health emergency, impacting refugees and residents alike. With nearly 60 lives lost and thousands affected, the government’s response includes vaccination campaigns and public health messages to promote proper hygiene practices. Given the densely populated IDP camps and limited sanitation, the ongoing risk remains considerable, necessitating urgent action and support from international agencies.
