Fifty Italian fashion companies have joined Yhub’s 4S Planet program to reduce their environmental impact. The initiative focuses on monitoring sustainability in raw materials, energy use, and logistics, as they confront significant climate challenges and rising emissions in the industry. In a commendable effort to combat climate change, fifty Italian fashion companies have partnered with Yhub’s 4S Planet program. This initiative is designed to assist fashion entities in minimizing their environmental footprint through effective monitoring of raw materials, energy utilization, and logistics renewal. The program promotes strategic actions including CO2 emission reductions, reshoring production to Italy, and a shift from air to maritime shipping, alongside the adoption of solar energy and electrification in manufacturing processes.

The urgency of this alliance is underscored by the outcomes of the recent COP29 climate talks in Baku, which revealed the challenges posed by rising global temperatures, projected to exceed pre-industrial levels by 1.5 degrees Celsius in 2024. The fashion industry, responsible for an estimated 2% to 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, faces scrutiny as textile fiber production has surged from 58 million tons in 2000 to 124 million tons in 2023, heavily dominated by polyester, which constitutes 57% of the output.

Yhub seeks to empower brands and supply chains by offering integrated tools to achieve greater sustainability and traceability. The organization serves over 3,000 clients and collaborates with more than 50 international brands, utilizing platforms like Ympact, which facilitates impact data management.

Francesca Rulli, the architect behind the 4Sustainability initiative and CEO of Yhub, states, “Decarbonization projects are at the heart of the virtuous strategies of many brands and, consequently, of the manufacturing companies that are part of their supply chain.” She emphasizes the significance of precise measurement of factory energy consumption across all processes to tackle sustainability challenges effectively. Rulli further notes, “Today, brands are demanding very detailed information on environmental aspects, but there are very few that value – even in terms of price – materials produced with a lower impact on the climate.”

Rulli highlights that brands are increasingly acknowledging their climate responsibilities, as they pursue partnerships with environmentally competent suppliers. This age of climate justice necessitates a collective commitment to accountability: “The brand takes on the role of a trailblazer and contributes, including economically, to systemic change.”

The fifty participating companies in the 4S Planet program are addressing sustainability through four pivotal strategies: reconsidering sourcing decisions, enhancing machinery and infrastructure, shifting to renewable energy sources, and optimizing logistics. “Sustainability is sometimes still described as a cost, but it is actually an investment, also because it leads to optimizing resources by generating a competitive advantage,” notes Rulli.

Moreover, the shift towards renewable energy necessitates the prioritization of electricity over methane gas, coupled with the installation of solar panels. The transition of logistics towards reshoring production within the EU, alongside an emphasis on maritime transport, signifies another critical improvement.
