Abdullahi, leader of the Waddani Party, won the Somaliland presidential election with 64% of the votes, defeating incumbent Muse Bihi Abdi. The election was delayed for two years, and both candidates focused on resuscitating the economy and gaining international recognition. Somaliland, having declared independence in 1991, continues to seek international acknowledgment while maintaining its own governance structure.

Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, known as “Irro,” leader of the opposition Waddani Party, has emerged victorious in the presidential election of Somaliland, a self-declared independent region of Somalia. Securing approximately 64 percent of the votes, Abdullahi decisively defeated the incumbent, President Muse Bihi Abdi, who garnered around 35 percent. The elections were held after a two-year delay due to funding constraints and other issues, amid promises from both candidates to revitalize the economy and pursue international recognition for Somaliland.

Since its declaration of independence from Somalia in 1991, Somaliland has established a relatively stable political environment, distinct from the ongoing conflicts affecting its southern counterpart. Despite its self-governance, currency, and security systems, Somaliland remains unrecognized internationally, which limits its access to global financial resources and travel opportunities for its citizens. The region’s leadership is actively seeking international acknowledgment, viewing potential agreements with Ethiopia as a strategic step toward that end.

The recent election victory of Abdullahi signifies a pivotal moment for Somaliland, highlighting the population’s desire for political change and economic progress. As the new administration prepares to take office, there is cautious optimism regarding efforts to secure international recognition and enhance regional stability. Furthermore, the implications of economic deals, particularly with Ethiopia, will be critical in shaping Somaliland’s future and its quest for global acknowledgment.
