Typhoon No. 1 Signal Expected This Weekend

Macao meteorologists are preparing to raise the no. 1 typhoon signal early Saturday morning as tropical storm Wipha approaches the region. The storm enters an 800-kilometre radius of Macao and presents a developing threat. The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau, which operates under the Portuguese initials SMG, emphasizes that residents must stay alerted to the latest updates on tropical cyclone developments.

Safety Precautions in Response to Wipha

In light of the no. 1 signal, locals are strongly advised to take precautions seriously. This includes securing outdoor items that could be easily tossed about by strong winds and closely monitoring potential hazards. Additionally, residents should check the stability of scaffolds and hoardings and vessels nearby are encouraged to consider finding safer shelter offshore as the storm progresses towards western Guangdong coastal areas.

Heat and Typhoon Combined Risks for Residents

Over in Hong Kong, approximately 60 kilometres away from Macao, the local observatory has indicated plans to issue the no. 3 signal as Wipha draws nearer. They have also mentioned that there’s a chance of seeing a no. 8 signal, which signifies fierce winds, by Sunday. Currently, alongside tropical storm preparations, a yellow hot weather alert persists throughout Macao today due to the sweltering heat, with some areas already hitting over 30°C early in the day. Heatstroke cases have also surged as helpline Peng On Tung reports managing around 10 cases a day due to these extreme weather conditions. A previous orange extreme hot weather warning was issued back in July when the temperature reached 35°C.

The tropical storm Wipha is set to bring significant weather changes to Macao, warranting the raising of the no. 1 typhoon signal. Residents must heed safety advisories and prepare for both strong winds and heat. Meteorologists continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring timely updates as conditions evolve.
