Additional sanctions have been placed on the Russian Defence Ministry’s branch that oversees its underwater intelligence-gathering, known as Gugi, as well as on 20 oil tankers and three companies that support the Russian energy sector.
In statements made during the G7 summit, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that the implemented sanctions are designed to target the core of Putin’s war strategy. “These sanctions strike right at the heart of Putin’s war machine, choking off his ability to continue his barbaric war in Ukraine,” he declared. Starmer reiterated the UK’s commitment to enhancing national security and expressed a determination to respond decisively to the threats posed by Russia.
Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary David Lammy echoed Starmer’s sentiments, expressing that Putin’s continued aggression highlights a blatant disregard for peace and lives. “Today’s sanctions demonstrate our intent to systematically dismantle his dangerous shadow fleet, starve his war machine, and support Ukraine in its defense efforts,” he stated.
In light of these developments, the UK Government is also coordinating with allies to further lower Russia’s oil revenues by tightening the price cap on oil exports. Amidst hopes for peace, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has shown willingness to engage in discussions, having accepted a US-backed ceasefire proposal. However, there has been no indication from Putin of a desire to meet with Zelensky, leaving the future of diplomatic negotiations uncertain.
