The Kenya Meteorological Department warns of strong winds and high ocean waves from May 23 to 25, affecting several counties. Wind speeds above 30 knots and waves over two meters are expected. Residents along the coast and southeastern regions must prepare for potential damage and disruptions to marine activities.

The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has issued a warning regarding significant weather conditions expected this weekend. From Friday, May 23, through Sunday, May 25, strong southerly winds are anticipated to impact several counties including Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale.

Residents, particularly those in coastal regions and the southeastern lowlands, should prepare for intense weather. Wind speeds are projected to exceed 30 knots, with ocean waves rising beyond two meters, prompting concerns over potential property damage and disruptions in marine activities.

On Saturday and Sunday, wind velocities may increase drastically, reaching over 35 knots before subsiding on Monday. Coastal counties, especially Tana River, Mombasa, Kilifi, and Kwale, are warned about large Indian Ocean waves that can hinder visibility, impacting both fishing and shipping operations.

Kenya Met urges vigilance, noting, “Residents in all the mentioned areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential gale (very strong winds) and large waves over the Indian Ocean.” Caution is echoed regarding likely wind-induced damages, particularly to roofs and other structures. Moreover, large waves could also significantly compromise visibility and marine pursuits.

With the chances of these severe weather phenomena occurring estimated between 33 and 66 percent, the warning arrives in the wake of ongoing heavy rains that have already triggered flooding in multiple regions, displacing numerous families. Rains are also expected to continue throughout the Highlands, Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Coast, and northwestern Kenya, with nighttime temperatures possibly dipping as low as 9 degrees Celsius.

As the region braces for these forecasts, Kenyans are urged to stay updated and prepared, as unpredictable weather could have a cascading effect on daily life.

In summary, the Kenya Met’s weather advisory indicates strong winds and high ocean waves are imminent this weekend, affecting various counties. Communities, particularly those along the coast, should be vigilant, as severe weather could pose risks of property damage and disrupt marine activities. With existing heavy rains already causing significant flooding, preparedness becomes particularly essential.
