Philippine mid-term elections see over 18,000 positions contested. Key Senate races could influence Sara Duterte’s impeachment process. Both Marcos and Duterte factions field candidates amid rising tensions and a political landscape in flux.

The Philippines is currently in the middle of a significant mid-term election, with over 18,000 positions available. Voting kicked off at 7:00 AM local time and is set to conclude by 7:00 PM. Key races are drawing attention, particularly for the twelve Senate seats that could substantially sway Vice-President Sara Duterte’s impending impeachment process. Other positions up for grabs include mayors, vice-mayors, and councilors in various cities and municipalities. Former President Rodrigo Duterte, despite his ongoing International Criminal Court trial in The Hague, is also on the ballot in Davao, his hometown.

Under the ticket of former President Rodrigo Duterte, candidates include his long-time aide Bong Go and ex-police chief Ronald dela Rosa, both prominent figures during Duterte’s controversial anti-drug campaign. This slate, dubbed “DuterTen,” is primarily composed of Duterte loyalists, some of whom are tied to the PDP-Laban party, recognized as pro-democracy since the 1980s. The lineup also features fugitive pastor Apollo Quiboloy, alongside a mix of entertainment and political figures.

Meanwhile, Bongbong Marcos’ senatorial slate features a variety of familiar names—former movie stars, seasoned senators, and scions of powerful political families. Under the coalition known as the Alliance for the New Philippines, Marcos’ allies aim to consolidate their influence ahead of significant decisions in the Senate. Among those running is Camille Villar, vying to succeed her mother in the Senate, while her brother Mark is also holding a seat there.

As the mid-term elections unfold, the stakes could not be higher for the Marcos and Duterte families. Both factions aim to solidify their political legacies and power amidst increasing tensions. With the potential for changing dynamics in the Senate, the outcomes will play a critical role in shaping the future of Philippine politics, especially regarding Sara Duterte’s presidential aspirations in 2028.
