In a significant development, Russia’s top military official has confirmed the presence of North Korean troops in Ukraine. During a recent videoconference with President Vladimir Putin, Valery Gerasimov, head of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, stated that North Korean forces have been crucial in initiatives regarding the Kursk border region. This marks the first time a Russian official has publicly acknowledged the deployment.
Gerasimov highlighted the role of North Korean servicemen in assisting Russian forces against Ukrainian troops, emphasizing their effectiveness and bravery. He stated, “I want to point out the participation of servicemen from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in the liberation of the Kursk Region’s border areas…” This cooperation aligns with the Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that binds Russia and North Korea.
According to estimates by South Korean officials, approximately 14,000 North Korean troops have reportedly been sent to aid Russia’s military efforts in Ukraine since last October, with an additional 3,000 troops dispatched this year. Interestingly, however, North Korea has not yet made any official statements regarding this troop deployment.
The partnership treaty signed by Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un at their summit last June articulated a commitment to mutual military support in case of aggression.
