Bigboy Nampungo has been sentenced to 30 years for his part in a violent robbery that stole US$74,000 from Wicknell Chivayo’s in-laws. Alongside Nampungo, several associates face criminal charges, while he admitted guilt to multiple counts of armed robbery. In a recent trial in Harare, an armed robber, Bigboy Nampungo, aged 27, has been sentenced to 60 years for his role in a robbery that netted US$74,000 in cash and valuables from businessman Wicknell Chivayo’s in-laws in Marondera. Nampungo will serve an effective 30 years as half of his sentence runs concurrently with the first three counts. His associates await trial, denying the allegations against them, while Nampungo pleaded guilty to six counts of armed robbery, acknowledging that he robbed six individuals on March 18, 2025.

During the criminal act, Nampungo and a gang were armed with rifles, pistols, machetes, and other weapons. They first assaulted and restrained a security guard named Mabunhu at Alpha and Omega Farm, demanding the whereabouts of other guards. Subsequently, they confronted and disarmed two other security personnel, using violence and threats to manage the situation.

The gang continued their assault, making their way to the main house where they encountered Gerald, who ultimately surrendered US$18,000, a loaded pistol, and two mobile phones after being threatened. The robbers then forced Vimbai to hand over US$1,100 in cash, a safe key, and a mobile device before demanding access to the safe, from which they took US$55,000.

As the robbery unfolded, Elphas Maruta, another armed individual, intervened but was met with gunfire from the robbers before they escaped with the stolen goods, which totaled US$74,000 in value. The case, characterized by brutal tactics and gun violence, highlights serious concerns regarding security and crime in the region.
