A woman in Nigeria was arrested for allegedly trafficking young girls, including her daughter, to Mauritania for N50,000 each. Further inquiries are ongoing, and the suspects are set to face charges soon.
Authorities in Nigeria apprehended a woman accused of trafficking young girls, including her own daughter, to Mauritania for prostitution in exchange for N50,000. The arrest occurred on March 22 in the Meiran area of Lagos State, spearheaded by the Nigeria Police Force’s Zone 2 Command, led by SP Francis Kpoughul.
A Zonal Public Relations Officer, Umma Ayuba, confirmed the suspects’ capture. Investigations revealed that the syndicate collaborated with accomplices in Mauritania, employing deceitful tactics to entice and transport victims. The suspects reportedly confessed their involvement during interrogation, shedding light on their recruitment practices.
The primary suspect admitted to being introduced to her accomplice by another perpetrator currently serving a prison sentence for similar offenses. She confessed to receiving N50,000 for each girl trafficked, including her 19-year-old daughter, and disclosed that she collected over N500,000 in total from the Mauritanian woman.
Furthermore, the second suspect claimed she was hired by the first suspect to recruit girls as domestic workers. However, upon sending one victim to the first suspect, she was rejected, leading her to realize the girls’ intended use as sex workers. The second suspect then chose to withdraw from the operation after becoming aware of its true nature.
Umma Ayuba stated that the suspects will face legal charges following the completion of the ongoing investigation into their crimes.
The case highlights the alarming issue of human trafficking in Nigeria, demonstrating the involvement of local and international syndicates. The swift actions by law enforcement are critical in addressing such crimes and protecting vulnerable individuals. The suspects’ confessions provide valuable insights into the operations of trafficking networks, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and enforcement of laws against human trafficking.
