On Friday, residents in Bangkok experienced a strong and prolonged earthquake, prompting the evacuation of buildings and shops. The tremor, which caused structures to sway, was first reported to originate from Myanmar, with a magnitude of 7.3 according to Germany’s GFZ for geosciences, recorded at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). In contrast, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the quake as having a magnitude of 7.7.

While there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage, witnesses described a frantic scene, with many people fleeing into the streets of Bangkok. Some also reported that water splashed out of swimming pools during the quake, illustrating its intensity. “I heard it and I was sleeping in the house, I ran as far as I could in my pyjamas out of the building,” recounted Duangjai, a resident from Chiang Mai, to the French AFP news agency. Tremors were felt across northern and central Thailand, disrupting daily life in affected areas.

The earthquake experienced in Bangkok and surrounding areas has been noted for its strength and duration, prompting immediate evacuation of buildings and shops. Although no casualties or widespread damage have been reported, the event caused considerable alarm, observable through witnesses’ reactions. Ongoing assessment by geological authorities continues to be essential to understand the earthquake’s impact.
