In the summer of 1992, I sought guidance from my great uncle Ernie Lowenstein to better understand my father. During our visit, Ernie recounted his experiences in Germany after Adolf Hitler rose to power, emphasizing the sharp increase in antisemitism. His insights have been particularly poignant for me in light of the current political climate in the United States, especially following Donald Trump’s recent inauguration.
I had attended Trump’s first inauguration in January 2017, shocked by his divisive rhetoric as he transitioned from Barack Obama, the first black president, to his controversial administration. His speech painted a grim picture for the future, indicating a departure from critical national values, such as commitment to healthcare, arts, and diversity—institutions integral to our democracy’s fabric.
It is crucial to clarify that I do not equate Trump with Hitler; there are significant differences between the contexts of 1930s Germany and modern-day America. We share a long-standing tradition of democracy, contrasting with the precarious state of the Weimar Republic. However, I note disturbing parallels in the erosion of democratic norms, driven by Trump’s persistent claims of election fraud and violent rhetoric.
Trump’s recent actions parallel the historical context of the Weimar Republic, where public trust in democracy was waning. His establishment of a hostile narrative toward election legitimacy, starting with the 2016 election, culminated in the January 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection. He continues to undermine democratic institutions, exemplified by his pardoning of individuals involved in the Capitol attack immediately upon taking office.
Significant executive orders have been issued during Trump’s ongoing presidency, designed to bypass democratic norms. This includes attempts to ban birthright citizenship and aggressive foreign policies reflecting imperialist aspirations. Such measures reflect a rapid consolidation of power, raising concerns over the erosion of democratic principles akin to those in pre-Nazi Germany.
Public reaction to Trump’s resurgence has notably shifted; many supporters display unyielding approval, while opposition appears more muted than before. The current political landscape sees Trump manipulating legislative power without significant checks. This concerning trend is exacerbated by corporate media’s complicity and the Supreme Court granting him increased immunity.
The muted reactions can be interpreted as wariness towards Trump’s continued unpredictability and the broader Republican control of Congress. The urgency of maintaining democratic integrity appears overshadowed by feelings of despair and powerlessness among the public. However, scholars warn that the transition toward what they term ‘competitive authoritarianism’ is perilous yet avoidable with persistent and strategic civic engagement.
As two months into the Trump administration conclude, I reflect on Ernie’s wisdom and comprehend the stakes for democracy. It is imperative to counteract these challenges with courage and resolve, upholding democratic values against a backdrop of increasing authoritarianism.
