Dr. Sandra Jowers-Barber will participate in a two-week seminar in Dakar, Senegal, focusing on West Africa and its diaspora. The seminar aims to foster global perspectives in higher education through lectures and site visits, and participants are expected to implement related projects at their institutions post-seminar.
Dr. Sandra Jowers-Barber, Ph.D., director of the Division of Humanities and Criminology at the University of the District of Columbia’s Community College, has been selected to participate in a prestigious two-week research seminar in Dakar, Senegal, from January 3 to January 21, 2024. This seminar is part of a competitive program facilitated by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) in partnership with the West African Research Center (WARC).
The CAORC-WARC 2024 Faculty Development Seminar includes visits to significant sites such as Goree Island, Toubacouta, and Saint-Louis, enhancing participants’ understanding of West African history and culture. CAORC provides fully funded opportunities aimed at faculty and administrators from U.S. community colleges and minority-serving institutions, which allows these educators to gain a global perspective on education.
The seminar is titled “West Africa and the Diaspora: Continuities and Transformations” and will encompass a range of activities, including lectures, site visits, panel discussions, and film screenings. Participants will explore various facets of Senegal—its history, culture, arts, economy, and political life—while emphasizing the connections between West Africa and its diaspora.
Additionally, participants will focus on Senegal’s religious diversity and the influence of transnational movements on society, particularly on youth. Following the seminar, attendees are required to design and implement a project to enhance internationalization at their respective institutions within one year, culminating in a project report for CAORC’s Open Educational Resources site. They will also contribute an article to the CAORC blog Field Notes within three months post-seminar.
In summary, Dr. Sandra Jowers-Barber’s selection for the CAORC-WARC 2024 Faculty Development Seminar reflects a significant opportunity for professional development and institutional growth. The seminar aims to deepen understanding of West Africa’s cultural and historical contexts and encourages participants to implement impactful projects at their institutions, contributing to a more global educational framework.
