On Saturday, Mozambican President Daniel Chapo emphasized the imperative of safeguarding human life in the wake of cyclones and extreme weather events. His remarks came during a visit to the Entente accommodation center in Mozambique Island district, Nampula province, where approximately 400 households displaced by Cyclone Jude are taking refuge. This disaster has impacted around 100,000 individuals, resulting in at least 14 reported fatalities.
President Chapo expressed his solidarity with the residents of Nampula, the province most severely affected by the cyclone. “I am here because Nampula was the province that suffered most from the cyclone, and so I came to show my solidarity,” he stated. He commended the National Disaster Management Institute (INGD) and local committees for minimizing casualties during the disaster response.
In addition to visiting the accommodation center, President Chapo inspected key roads severely hindered by Cyclone Jude, noting the vast damage across Nampula province and the challenges faced in accessing remote areas. Earlier assessments have raised concerns regarding a potential increase in casualties as recovery efforts continue.
The President observed the destruction of a crucial 200-meter-long bridge over the Monapo River in Meconta district, vital for the main north-south highway (EN1). Another bridge, over the Mecuburi River, has also sustained damage. He assured that contractors would be mobilized to address the necessary repairs, remarking, “I thought I should come here to see the damage for myself. The damage to the roads is enormous.”
