The IOM will distribute 2,800 emergency kits to victims of Tropical Cyclone Jude in Mozambique. The cyclone has caused 14 deaths and affected over 100,000 individuals. There is an urgent need for support as the rainy season exacerbates challenges faced by those impacted by the cyclone and prior weather events.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) is set to distribute 2,800 emergency kits to victims of Tropical Cyclone Jude in the Zambézia and Nampula provinces of Mozambique. This information was disclosed by a United Nations agency on Friday, highlighting their commitment to assess needs and provide essential support in the area.

Tropical Cyclone Jude made its landfall in Mozambique on Monday morning, impacting the Mossuril district in Nampula. The cyclone has tragically resulted in 14 fatalities, injured 60 individuals, and affected approximately 100,410 people across various provinces, including Tete, Manica, Zambézia, Niassa, and Cabo Delgado.

The emergency kits prepared for delivery include essential materials such as mats, mosquito nets, blankets, and tarpaulins. IOM emphasized the urgent requirement for assistance in the impacted regions, evidence of the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

Inocêncio Impissa, government spokesman, reported that the cyclone has damaged 30 health centers. Current estimates indicate that 19,961 families have been impacted, alongside the destruction of 20,244 residences and the disruption of 59 schools and 182 classrooms, affecting 17,401 students and 264 teachers along with 1,262 agricultural areas.

Mozambique is currently experiencing its rainy season from October to April, during which Tropical Cyclones Chido and Dikeledi have also inflicted damage in the northern regions. Over the past months, these cyclones have led to substantial destruction and loss, impacting about 736,000 individuals in the Cabo Delgado and Nampula provinces.

From 2019 to 2023, extreme weather events, including cyclones and storms, have claimed at least 1,016 lives and affected approximately 4.9 million people in Mozambique. The nation is particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, enduring recurrent floods and tropical cyclones in the rainy season, alongside extended periods of intense drought.

In summary, the aid from the IOM will provide critical emergency supplies to victims of Tropical Cyclone Jude in Mozambique. The cyclone has caused significant destruction, affecting thousands and highlighting the country’s ongoing struggle with extreme weather patterns driven by climate change. Immediate support remains crucial to assist those impacted and to facilitate recovery efforts in the affected provinces.
