The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team prepares to commemorate its 100th event in the FIA World Rally Championship by competing in the iconic Safari Rally Kenya from March 20 to 23. In this milestone rally, the team aims to continue its unbeaten streak following a successful season start that included a one-two finish at both the Monte Carlo and Sweden events, marking a historic beginning for any manufacturer in the modern era.
Elfyn Evans leads the drivers’ standings, coming off a victorious performance in Sweden. The Safari Rally holds a special significance for Takamoto Katsuta, who has previously secured three podium finishes there. Additionally, Kalle Rovanperä possesses notable strength on the Safari with his prior victories in 2022 and 2024. Sami Pajari is set to debut in the event with his TGR-WRT2 entry.
The Safari Rally has remained a challenging event, featuring various difficult terrains that range from rocky sections to soft sand, which can particularly hinder drivers. The current weather conditions can transform dry paths into muddy obstacles, therefore necessitating the use of snorkel systems for better navigation in adverse situations. This year, the rally comprises the longest distance in many years, totaling 384.86 competitive kilometers.
The event will commence in Nairobi with the Kasarani super special stage and will include new stages such as Mzabibu and Camp Moran. The challenging terrain leads crews to the beautiful Lake Elmenteita on Saturday, followed by Sunday’s stages culminating in the Power Stage at Hell’s Gate. The GR Yaris Rally2 will make its debut on the African terrain with customer entries prominently featuring in the competition.
The upcoming Safari Rally Kenya presents a significant occasion for TOYOTA GAZOO Racing, marking its 100th WRC rally while aiming to extend its success in this challenging environment. The team prepares its drivers, including champions and debutants alike, to confront the unpredictable aspects of the rally. The event encapsulates not only a test of speed but also of adaptability and early season momentum as they navigate the unique roads of Kenya.
