On Wednesday, unidentified assailants murdered Emerson Palmira, chairperson of the Jurisdictional Council of the Mozambican Youth Organization (OJM), which is affiliated with the ruling Frelimo Party. This tragic event occurred in the Inharrime district of the southern province of Inhambane, where the assailants broke into his residence during daylight hours and fatally bludgeoned him.
Reports suggest that Emerson Palmira may have previously proclaimed himself an “untouchable” member of the Frelimo Party after verbally attacking a group of anti-government demonstrators protesting against rising living costs. Additionally, on the same day of the murder, rioters set fire to the Frelimo offices in Inharrime, indicating a possible connection between the two events.
The Mozambican police have not yet released a statement concerning this surge of violence; however, the timing raises concerns. Notably, this incident follows closely the assassination of two young supporters of the former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane in the nearby Massinga district just four days prior. The victims, Daniel Guambe, aged 28, and Rafito Sitoe, aged 21, were members of the Optimistic Party for the Development of Mozambique (Podemos), the main opposition party in parliament.
Podemos has publicly held the police accountable for these murders, calling for a thorough investigation into both incidents to ensure justice is served.
