The Windhoek High Court is set to commence the trial of Rodney Hoxobeb, a farmworker accused of murdering his employer, Christof Mungunda, at the Tallismanus settlement in the Omaheke region. This trial follows Hoxobeb’s brief court appearance on Monday and is scheduled for Tuesday. Hoxobeb, 29 years old, has been charged with several offenses, primarily concerning the brutal killing of Mungunda in September 2022.
According to the charges, Hoxobeb had been working as a general farmworker for Mungunda since July 2022. It is alleged that an argument ensued between the two men on September 16, 2022, which led Hoxobeb to inform his girlfriend of his intent to kill Mungunda. The indictment states that Hoxobeb attacked Mungunda with a wooden axe handle as he returned to his farmhouse after turning off a generator, striking him multiple times in the head and neck.
The prosecution further claims that after realizing Mungunda was still alive, Hoxobeb struck him with a rock, resulting in blunt-force trauma that caused Mungunda’s death at the scene. Following the incident, Hoxobeb reportedly absconded in Mungunda’s Toyota pick-up truck, fleeing with his girlfriend and her cousin, and even collided with a co-worker in the process.
Additionally, it is alleged that Hoxobeb consumed alcohol during his flight, leading to reckless driving on public roads in the Kanaan location. Hoxobeb now faces multiple charges including murder, attempted murder, robbery under aggravated circumstances, reckless driving, driving without a license, and operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
In summary, the trial of Rodney Hoxobeb, accused of murdering his employer Christof Mungunda, is poised to begin in the Windhoek High Court. Facing serious charges, including murder and robbery, Hoxobeb’s actions have raised significant public concern. This case underscores the complexities surrounding workplace relationships and the grave consequences of violence.
