Qatar has advocated for global efforts to place Israeli nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards and for Israel to join the NPT as a non-nuclear state. Ambassador Al Hammadi stressed the implementation of existing UN resolutions regarding Israel’s nuclear obligations and called for urgent international action to uphold Palestinian rights and humanitarian aid.

The State of Qatar has urged for stronger international efforts to bring all Israeli nuclear facilities under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and to encourage Israel to join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) as a non-nuclear state. This call was made by HE Jassim Yacoub Al Hammadi, Qatar’s Ambassador to the United Nations, during a session of the IAEA Board of Governors in Vienna.

Ambassador Al Hammadi highlighted the importance of the international community adhering to commitments made under various UN resolutions, which demand Israel to place its nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards. He noted that some resolutions explicitly call for Israel’s accession to the NPT.

He pointed out that every Middle Eastern country, except Israel, is a party to the NPT and has established effective safeguarding agreements with the IAEA. Furthermore, Al Hammadi criticized Israel’s ongoing aggressive policies, including extremist calls for the displacement of Palestinians, military operations in the West Bank, and restrictions on humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Last week, Qatar submitted a memorandum to the International Court of Justice, seeking an advisory opinion regarding Israel’s obligations as outlined in a UN General Assembly resolution. This request emphasizes Israel’s duty to permit UN operations and protect the properties of UN agencies.

In conclusion, HE Al Hammadi underscored the necessity for decisive actions by the international community to compel Israel to adhere to international resolutions, respect the Palestinian right to self-determination, and work towards restoring stability in the Middle East, thereby mitigating potential global risks.

In summary, Qatar has called for international measures to ensure that Israel’s nuclear facilities comply with IAEA safeguards and for Israel to join the NPT as a non-nuclear state. Ambassador Al Hammadi’s statements emphasized adherence to international resolutions that require Israel to respect Palestinian rights and humanitarian operations. Qatar’s recent memorandum to the International Court of Justice further highlights the urgency for the international community’s intervention to safeguard fundamental human rights in the region and promote peace.
