Morocco Reports Significant Decline in Measles Cases Amid Vaccination Efforts

Morocco’s Ministry of Health reports a continuous decrease in measles cases, known as Bouhmroun, for five weeks. A 13% decline was noted recently, with efforts attributed to healthcare professionals and increased public vaccination participation. The vaccination campaign has been extended until March 28, with a call for vigilance and community involvement ongoing.
Morocco’s Ministry of Health reported a consistent decline in measles cases, known locally as “Bouhmroun,” for five consecutive weeks. The ministry attributed this improvement to efforts aimed at controlling the disease’s transmission. During the week of February 24 to March 2, cases decreased by 13%, resulting in a cumulative total of 2,481 cases, following a prior 14.9% drop in cases the previous week.
This apparent progress is a testament to the dedicated work of healthcare professionals across the nation, effective collaboration among stakeholders, and heightened public participation in vaccination initiatives as part of the national vaccination verification campaign. Consequently, the ministry has decided to extend the vaccination campaign’s duration until March 28, ensuring comprehensive access to essential vaccines for all families.
Despite the reported reductions in measles cases nationwide, the ministry cautioned that ongoing vigilance is necessary. They recognized existing disparities in vaccination coverage across different provinces. The ministry also underscored the importance of public engagement in efforts to eradicate measles, emphasizing vaccination as a key preventive strategy.
Last December, Health Minister Amine Tahraoui revealed that Morocco had recorded a total of 19,515 measles cases since October 2023, with 107 fatalities attributed to the disease, which represents 0.55% of all reported cases. Notably, half of the deaths occurred in children under the age of 12, highlighting the vulnerability of younger populations to this viral illness.
In summary, Morocco has observed a steady decline in measles cases, with a significant 13% reduction reported recently. Continued efforts in vaccination and public health initiatives have proven effective, as reflected in the statistics. The Ministry of Health urges sustained vigilance and community participation in vaccination campaigns to maintain this progress against Bouhmroun, particularly focused on protecting vulnerable populations.
