This group, mostly composed of students from Tlaxcala, had gone missing while vacationing in Oaxaca on February 27. The vehicle involved, a dark grey Volkswagen Vento with Tlaxcala license plates, was discovered 150 miles southeast of Mexico City.

Video surveillance captured the vehicle on February 24 traveling along the Atlixcayotl highway, approximately 90 miles west of where the remains were ultimately found. While no suspects have been publicly identified, the violent nature of the killings has led to suspicions of cartel involvement. Additionally, Mexican media outlets have noted that the ninth victim remains unidentified.
