Amritsar: Gurpreet Singh, a 33-year-old man aspiring to migrate to the United States via the ‘Dunki’ route, tragically passed away from a heart attack in Guatemala. Punjab State Cabinet Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal visited Gurpreet’s family to express condolences and address the dangers associated with illegal immigration. Mr. Dhaliwal urged individuals to refrain from seeking illegal avenues for migration, highlighting the recent struggles faced by many in America.
The Minister reported on the family’s sorrow over Gurpreet’s death, noting that they have begun the process of repatriating his body. “The deceased man was attempting to reach America illegally, which has led to significant heartbreak for his family. I implore the youth of Punjab to abandon all illegal travel intentions,” he stated emphatically.
Gurpreet’s brother, Tara Singh, shared that his brother had pursued the American dream after engaging with a Chandigarh-based agent, paying a substantial sum for transportation. Gurpreet traveled through Guyana before being guided by a Pakistani agent to traverse the jungles of Panama. The circumstances of his passing are deeply troubling, as a friend reportedly informed the family of his sudden health crisis.
“I wish to communicate a vital message: do not make the same grave error my brother did,” Tara Singh cautioned, articulating the family’s desperation to recover Gurpreet’s remains. He expressed concern over fraudulent agents who often promise safe passage but deliver perilous journeys instead, urging accountability for those responsible for such illegal activities.
The tragic incident occurs amid a context of heightened scrutiny, as the United States has begun deporting Indian individuals who have migrated illegally. Recently, a C-17 Globemaster aircraft transported 104 Indian nationals back to Punjab’s Amritsar.
