Harare, Zimbabwe – Tragically, 60 individuals have lost their lives, and nine others have sustained injuries in rainfall-related incidents across Zimbabwe since the commencement of the rainy season last October, as reported by the Department of Civil Protection (DCP) on Thursday.
After enduring below-average rainfall from October to December 2024, Zimbabwe has faced significant downpours beginning in January, leading to various rain-related disasters such as drownings and strikes by lightning.
The DCP’s situation report reveals that the heavy rains have inflicted damage on vital public infrastructures, including schools, health facilities, roads, bridges, dams, electricity poles, and irrigation systems.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families affected. Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe expressed sorrow over the loss of life and infrastructure, urging artisanal miners to cease operations until conditions improve and advising citizens to avoid open areas during storms and refrain from attempting to cross flooded rivers.
To provide assistance, the DCP, in conjunction with the police and the Zimbabwe Defense Forces, is actively engaged in search and rescue operations. Furthermore, the government is mobilizing necessary resources to support recovery efforts.
