Cyber Crime Losses in Indonesia Exceed Rp 33 Billion by 2015

As of August 2015, cybercrime in Indonesia has led to losses exceeding Rp 33.29 billion due to 36.6 million internet attacks. As of August 2015, cyber crimes perpetrated by hackers in Indonesia have resulted in significant financial losses, amounting to Rp 33.29 billion. Police Commissioner General Agung Setya, who serves as the deputy director of the special economic crime unit, reported that in three years there have been 36.6 million attacks on internet networks. He noted that Indonesia remains vulnerable to such threats.

From 2012 up until April 2015, the Indonesian Police’s IT/Cyber Crime division apprehended 497 individuals suspected of cyber-related crimes. Among those arrested, 389 were foreign nationals and 108 were Indonesians. The increasing rate of cybercrime correlates with the rising number of internet users and the improved speed of internet connectivity in the country.

Setya expressed concern regarding a new trend in IT crime involving the hacking of luxury cars, which is growing alongside the rise of smart vehicles utilizing internet-based technologies like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. He referenced a concerning incident in London, where 6,000 instances of car theft were reported, attributed to the exploitation of keyless-entry systems.
