Four individuals from Lesotho were apprehended on Saturday concerning the murder of Free State police officer Constable Justice Sephooa. Sephooa, who served in the Ficksburg crime intelligence unit, was brutally shot at his home in a calculated ambush. Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale confirmed that the suspects, aged between 34 and 36, were arrested by a collaborative Free State task force following a rigorous investigation.
The arrests occurred in Stilfontein, North West, after investigators located the suspects and subsequently transported them to Bethlehem for processing. On January 21, it was reported that two unidentified men arrived at Constable Sephooa’s residence, where one opened fire, resulting in his death before both assailants fled the scene. The suspects are set to appear in the Ficksburg Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder.
In another incident, four suspects were taken into custody for the alleged murder of two Free State police officers, Constables Sipho Mohapi and Gedione Motloung, during a response to a house robbery on January 4. One perpetrator, Marasane Kabelo Anmony, a South African, was arrested on January 16 and charged with both murder and robbery. Lesotho national Pakiso Lethako was detained a day earlier, while his accomplice, Lakaje Piet Thetha, was captured shortly thereafter.
The ongoing issue of violence against police officers in South Africa has led to increased concerns within law enforcement communities. In recent months, there have been multiple incidents where police personnel have been targeted, prompting a significant response from investigative units like the Hawks. The collaboration between the Hawks, Tactical Response Teams, and local police highlights a concerted effort to combat crime and ensure justice for fallen officers.
The recent arrest of four Lesotho nationals for their involvement in the murder of Constable Justice Sephooa underscores the serious threat posed to law enforcement in South Africa. Additionally, the detention of suspects linked to the killings of Constables Sipho Mohapi and Gedione Motloung further illustrates the ongoing violence faced by police officers. Collective efforts among law enforcement agencies are crucial in addressing these violent acts and bringing perpetrators to justice.
