A magnitude 5.5 earthquake occurred in northern Ethiopia, coinciding with a volcanic eruption, following months of heightened seismic activity. With no reported injuries, evacuations were made for local residents and livestock. The US Geological Survey noted over 67 earthquakes since late September in the area, signaling increasing structural damage and tremors.

On Friday, a magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck northern Ethiopia, coinciding with a volcanic eruption that followed months of increased seismic activity, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. The volcanic eruption occurred around 5:30 a.m. (1430 GMT) near Segento in the northeast Afar region, according to local sources. A local official, Aden Bela, noted that while smoke had ceased from the crater, lava continued to flow, necessitating the evacuation of local residents and livestock, though specific evacuation numbers were not provided.

The US Geological Survey indicated that over 67 earthquakes have been recorded in the region since late September, particularly affecting the Fantale area, which is part of the Great Rift Valley. Residents have reported significant structural damage, including the collapse of more than 30 homes, and an increase in the frequency and severity of tremors. One local resident expressed concern, stating, “Houses are collapsing day by day,” illustrating the growing anxiety among the population in the affected areas.

Ethiopia is located along the East African Rift, an area known for its volcanic and seismic activity. The recent earthquake and volcanic eruption are attributed to this geological phenomenon, characterized by a series of tectonic movements that contribute to unpredictable natural events. The Great Rift Valley, encompassing parts of northern Ethiopia, has historically been susceptible to such incidents. These conditions have led to increased monitoring by geological agencies, as they evaluate the ongoing seismic activity and its implications for local communities.

The recent magnitude 5.5 earthquake and accompanying volcanic eruption in northern Ethiopia underscore the region’s vulnerability to seismic and volcanic events. The increase in geological activity, particularly noted since September, has raised concerns within local communities, leading to residential evacuations and structural damage. While no injuries have been reported thus far, the situation remains critical as authorities continue to assess the impact and ensure the safety of affected populations.
