Diljit Dosanjh, known widely as one of the biggest Asian stars today, is facing an unprecedented challenge in getting his latest film, Sardaar Ji 3, released in India. Despite topping the UK’s list of top 50 Asian celebrities and having an impressive global fanbase, Dosanjh’s current situation highlights a glaring clash of cultural and political interests. He’s also celebrated for his sold-out concert tours around the world and high-profile moments like attending the Met Gala, but these accolades do little to bridge the gap on this issue.

Political Tensions Impact Film’s Distribution

Launched internationally on June 27, Sardaar Ji 3 is already making waves, potentially becoming a high-grossing film in the Punjabi-language cinema. However, Indian audiences are left in the cold, with the film not receiving a release due to the co-star, Hania Aamir, being Pakistani. The bitter backdrop of heightened tensions following the militant attack in Kashmir on April 22 has added layers of controversy, leading authorities to deem the movie inappropriate for Indian cinemas despite its success overseas, where it garnered 336 million rupees in its first week.

Industry Voices Weigh In on Censorship

Industry experts like Girish Johar believe that had Sardaar Ji 3 been available in India, its earnings could have been significantly higher, since Dosanjh draws crowds. But the ongoing debate around censorship remains a thorny issue. Renowned filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has criticized the decision, suggesting that objections to Aamir’s participation are merely a facade for deeper ideological control. Meanwhile, the controversy surrounding the film has ramped up interest among audiences in Pakistan, with some viewing the ban as an invitation to watch it more intently, according to Asim Nawaz Abbasi from the Dayspring.

Another Film Faces Censorship Challenges

This situation is not isolated. Another film featuring Dosanjh, titled Panjab ’95, which tells the story of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, remains caught in a web of censorship after being submitted to the CBFC back in 2022. Director Honey Trehan reveals a frustrating journey plagued by excessive cuts and demands to alter essential parts of the film. Each round with the CBFC resulted in more cuts, leading to the unrecognizable state of the film that was supposed to shed light on crucial historical events. Trehan’s experience demonstrates a troubling trend of filmmakers battling a bureaucratic system that seems bent on silencing vital narratives.
