This occurred shortly after Were was gunned down in broad daylight on Nairobi’s Valley Road, triggering a widespread manhunt.
Kuria is believed to have executed a calculated hit on the late MP, having trailed him through Nairobi’s central business district before ambushing him in heavy traffic, resulting in Were’s fatal shooting. Investigators report that following the attack, Kuria fled to Mihang’o, where he disposed of the murder weapon, and then continued his escape via public transport.
A senior officer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, noted, “This man was on the run, and his arrest marks a major breakthrough in our investigation. We believe he was the triggerman.” As investigators closed in, they were able to intercept communications which revealed Kuria’s plans to leave the country. This ultimately led to his arrest at a lodging facility in Isebania, alongside another suspect.
Now, with Kuria in custody, the number of individuals detained in connection with Were’s assassination rises to 11. Among those already apprehended include Were’s personal bodyguard Allan Omondi, his driver Walter Owino, and William Imoli, viewed by detectives as a crucial player in organizing and financing the operation.
Authorities are also looking into connections to prominent figures, including businessman and politician Phillip Aroko, and Ebel Ochieng, the director of Lake Basin Development Authority, both suspected of providing financial support for the assassination. Other detainees, Edwin Oduor and Dennis Manyasi, add to the expanding list of those implicated.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations is currently analyzing various bank transactions and communication records between suspects in an effort to unveil the complete motive behind this targeted murder. It is known that MP Were was laid to rest last Friday at his rural home in Kachien village, located within his Kasipul Constituency.
