The Tonga Meteorological Service has declared the end of the 2024-2025 Cyclone season, although cyclones could still form. The season had average activity with four cyclones, no severe systems appeared. Residents are advised to stay vigilant and informed through official channels.

The Tonga Meteorological Service has officially announced the conclusion of the 2024-2025 Tropical Cyclone season, which runs from November to April. Officials, however, warn that there remains a possibility of cyclones developing even outside of this defined period. Residents of Tonga are encouraged to maintain vigilance in light of this cautionary note.

This cyclone season was characterized by average activity, a scenario that aligned well with predictions made prior to the season commencing in October 2024. Over the course of the season, the Southwest Pacific region recorded a total of 11 tropical disturbances. Of these, four developed into cyclones, specifically TC ‘Pita’ of Category 1, TC ‘Rae’ of Category 2, TC ‘Seru’ of Category 2, and TC ‘Tam’ of Category 1.

While forecasts initially suggested the likelihood of 1 to 2 cyclones, and a 50% chance of severe cyclonic activity (Category 3 or above), the season concluded without the occurrence of any severe cyclones. Most of the cyclonic systems that did form, including Pita and Rae, primarily impacted the western and southwestern waters of Tonga.

The Meteorological Service has reiterated that cyclonic systems can sporadically emerge outside the regular cyclone season. Such formations will still be factored into the annual statistics, thus residents should remain informed and alert. For further weather updates and information, individuals can reach out to the Meteorology Division at 35355 or check the official website at www.met.gov.to.

In summary, while the official cyclone season in Tonga has concluded for the 2024-2025 period, the potential for cyclone development outside this timeframe calls for ongoing vigilance among residents. This season’s activity was in line with forecasts, with no severe cyclones recorded despite the emergence of several disturbances. Citizens are urged to stay connected with official updates to remain informed.
