The recent presidential election in Gabon, the first since the military coup in 2023, has faced criticism from the former prime minister, Alain Claude Bilie-By-Nze. In a statement following the election, Bilie-By-Nze described the process as opaque and unfree, claiming, “What we experienced on Saturday, April 12 was not a free election.” He emphasized that he had never witnessed such extensive misuse of state resources in his political career.

Alain Claude Bilie-By-Nze was defeated by Oligui Nguema, who achieved a significant victory with 90.35% of the votes. Bilie-By-Nze secured only 3%, placing him far behind in the election against seven other candidates. Given that Gabon has a population of approximately 2.3 million, with a substantial portion living in poverty, this election was viewed as pivotal for the nation’s future.

Oligui Nguema, the former head of the Republican Guard, seized power in August 2023, removing President Ali Bongo Ondimba and ending a political dynasty that lasted 55 years, initiated by Bongo’s father. Nguema’s intention is to solidify his authority in a seven-year term as president.

Despite the electoral defeat, Bilie-By-Nze expressed his intentions to remain active in politics and wished success to the new leadership.
