EU Election Observation Mission Deploys Observers for Philippine Midterm Elections

The EU EOM is deploying 72 long-term observers across the Philippines for the National Midterm Elections. They received training on the electoral framework and will observe all stages of the elections. The mission is led by Chief Observer Marta Temido and aims to ensure a comprehensive and impartial evaluation of the electoral process. A total of over 200 observers will participate, with a final report to be released later.

The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) has deployed 72 long-term observers across the Philippines in preparation for the National Midterm Elections. These observers received extensive training in Manila, covering aspects such as the electoral framework, political climate, and the media environment.

The mission is led by Chief Observer Marta Temido, a Member of the European Parliament from Portugal, who will soon visit the Philippines. Deputy Chief Observer Manuel Sánchez de Nogués emphasized, “Our long-term observers will be deployed across all regions of the Philippines, covering both urban and rural areas. They will observe the electoral process before, during, and after the vote on 12 May…”

In addition to the long-term observers, approximately 100 short-term observers will join the EU EOM before Election Day, alongside a delegation of European Parliament members and accredited diplomats. The total number of observers from EU Member States, Canada, Norway, and Switzerland will exceed 200, ensuring thorough oversight of the elections on 12 May.

Mr. Sánchez de Nogués elaborated on the mission’s focus, stating that, “The EU Election Observation Mission conducts a comprehensive analysis of the electoral process using a well-established methodology developed by the EU…” The mission will analyze various key aspects of the election process while maintaining strict independence and impartiality.

Following Election Day, the EU EOM will issue a preliminary statement and continue its operations until the end of May. A detailed final report will be produced later, offering recommendations for the Philippine authorities to enhance future elections. The EU EOM, invited by the Philippine Government, has been stationed in the country since 28 March, pledging neutrality and adherence to international election observation principles.
