The ruling CRC party led by President Azali Assoumani won 28 of 33 parliamentary seats in Comoros, confirming its majority. The election results, pending Supreme Court validation, were boycotted by opposition parties alleging fraud. Assoumani, in power since 2016, now strengthens his authority amid ongoing tensions.

The ruling Convention for the Renewal of the Comoros (CRC) party, under the leadership of President Azali Assoumani, has achieved a significant success by winning 28 out of 33 parliamentary seats, thus maintaining its majority within the Comoros. The electoral commission has announced these preliminary results, which now await confirmation from the Supreme Court. Some opposition parties boycotted the election, alleging electoral fraud by Assoumani’s party.

President Assoumani, a former military official, initially came to power through a coup in 1999 but resigned in 2006 after serving one term. He re-entered the political arena in 2016 following a successful presidential campaign. Since then, he has retained the presidency, with constitutional amendments in 2018 enabling him to circumvent term limits and disrupt a previous rotational presidency among the Comoros’ three islands. This recent electoral victory further consolidates his political authority amidst prevailing tensions in the country.

The CRC party’s recent parliamentary win exemplifies President Assoumani’s enduring influence in Comorian politics, especially following the constitutional changes that allowed him to extend his presidency. Despite the opposition’s allegations of fraud and their boycott of the elections, the ruling party’s success in retaining a majority underlines existing political divisions within the nation. Assoumani’s grip on power appears strengthened, leading to potential implications for the Comoros’ political landscape.
