Ethiopia Launches 100 Electric Buses to Enhance Urban Mobility

Addis Ababa has launched 100 electric buses to promote electric mobility, designed with advanced technologies and set to improve urban transport. These buses aim to alleviate transport shortages while significantly reducing emissions. The Ethiopian government targets 500,000 electric vehicles within a decade, reinforcing efforts to phase out gasoline and diesel cars.

The Addis Ababa City Administration has launched a fleet of 100 electric buses in Ethiopia’s capital to encourage electric mobility. These buses, assembled by Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex with components sourced from China, feature advanced technologies such as an Integrated Intelligent Transportation System and a Fare Collection System.

These electric buses are now operational on the newly established Bus Rapid Transit route, enhancing commuting options for residents. Not only do they offer a convenient travel solution, but they are also environmentally friendly, boasting zero emissions and providing significant passenger capacity, as articulated by Alemu Sime, the Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics.

These buses will operate in dedicated lanes, accelerating commute times and addressing the public transportation deficit in Addis Ababa. The Ethiopian government is keen on expanding its electric vehicle initiative, with a target of raising the number of electric vehicles from 100,000 to 500,000 within ten years, intending to replace 95% of fuel-powered vehicles.

To facilitate this transition to electric mobility, the government has implemented a ban on the import of gasoline and diesel vehicles, which began last year amid rising global fuel prices.

This initiative reflects Ethiopia’s commitment to sustainable transport solutions and improving the public transport network to better serve its citizens.
