The Addis Ababa City Administration has unveiled a fleet of 100 electric buses in the Ethiopian capital, signifying a vital advancement in the promotion of electric mobility in the nation. Assembled by the Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex using components sourced from China, these buses are equipped with advanced technologies, including an Intelligent Transportation System and a Fare Collection System.

Now operational, these electric buses serve as a convenient transportation option for residents along newly established Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes, enhancing the public transport infrastructure in Addis Ababa. Designed to be environmentally friendly, these buses produce zero emissions, ensuring a comfortable ride with substantial passenger capacity, as stated by Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics Alemu Sime.

Minister Sime emphasized that the electric buses will utilize dedicated lanes, facilitating quicker travel for commuters. This initiative is anticipated to significantly alleviate the current public transport shortages in the city, offering a more efficient and sustainable commuting alternative for residents.

The Ethiopian Ministry of Transport and Logistics indicates that over 100,000 electric vehicles currently operate within the country, with a target to increase this figure to 500,000 in the next ten years. This initiative aims to transition 95% of fuel-powered vehicles to electric alternatives. To encourage this shift towards electric mobility, the Ethiopian government imposed a ban on the importation of gasoline and diesel vehicles in response to rising global fuel prices.
