The Addis Ababa City Administration has launched 100 electric buses to promote sustainable transportation. Manufactured locally with imported components, the buses feature advanced technologies and operate on a new rapid transit route. This initiative is part of Ethiopia’s goal to significantly increase electric vehicle usage while transitioning away from fuel-powered options.

The Addis Ababa City Administration has launched a fleet of 100 electric buses in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, aimed at promoting electric mobility. This initiative aligns with the government’s broader plan to enhance sustainable transportation in the East African region.

The electric buses, produced by Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex with components imported from China, are equipped with advanced technologies, including an Intelligent Transportation System and a Fare Collection System. This marks a significant step toward modernizing public transport in the city.

These electric buses now provide a reliable commuting solution for the residents along the newly established Bus Rapid Transit route. With zero emissions, these environmentally friendly buses are designed to improve the public transport network while providing a comfortable travel experience for passengers.

Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics, Alemu Sime, stated that the electric buses will operate on dedicated bus lanes, ensuring expedited travel for commuters, aiming to significantly ease the transportation challenges faced by Addis Ababa.

Currently, over 100,000 electric vehicles are operational in Ethiopia, with aspirations to increase this figure to 500,000 within the next ten years, which would result in the replacement of 95 percent of fuel-powered vehicles. In an effort to accelerate this transition, the Ethiopian government imposed an import ban on gasoline and diesel vehicles last year, amid rising global fuel prices.

The introduction of 100 electric buses in Addis Ababa represents a pivotal advancement in Ethiopia’s transportation sector, aiming at sustainable mobility. By enhancing the public transport network and reducing emissions, this initiative aligns with the government’s ambitious goals for electric vehicles, further supported by regulations on fuel-powered vehicle imports.
