China’s Poverty Alleviation Project Transforms Tanorn Village in Cambodia
A China-aided poverty alleviation project has transformed Tanorn village in Cambodia, enhancing living standards and infrastructure since 2021. Villagers have gained improved access to clean water, electricity, and economic opportunities, showcasing successful international cooperation for poverty alleviation.
The China-aided poverty alleviation project initiated in 2021 has remarkably transformed Tanorn village in Cambodia’s Bati district. Located approximately 60 kilometers south of Phnom Penh, this village, which comprises 72 hectares and more than 130 households, has completely shifted from isolation to modernity due to this initiative funded by the China Foundation for Peace and Development and implemented by Cambodia’s Civil Society Alliance Forum.
Tanorn village previously faced numerous challenges, including lack of access to vital resources such as clean water, electricity, education, and healthcare. Villager Por Sokhim, aged 51, noted that her family had relied solely on rice farming before the project’s implementation. Thanks to the new infrastructure, her family now operates a grocery store, and her husband runs a motorcycle repair shop from home.
Sokhim highlighted the dramatic changes brought on by the project, stating, “But since China has funded a poverty alleviation project in my village, we have got concrete roads, sewage systems, solar power, and particularly clean water.” She expressed gratitude for the improvements in her village and acknowledged the positive impact on community livelihoods.
Another villager, Touch Seanghong, emphasized the prior hardships due to poor road access, which inhibited the sales of agricultural products. Now, with new concrete roads, villagers feel secure traveling to and from the market. Seanghong remarked on the various improvements brought about by the project, including solar power and a multi-purpose building, saying, “We admire Chinese friends for sacrificing both physical and mental energies to help develop our Tanorn village.”
Chea Munyrith, the planning and project director of the Civil Society Alliance Forum, stated that the project has significantly enhanced living conditions, improving health, education, and environmental concerns. He indicated that many families in Tanorn have transitioned from low-income to high-income lifestyles, attributing these changes to China’s ongoing aid and dedication to poverty alleviation across Cambodia and beyond.
