The ARPC has declared ex-Tropical Cyclone Dianne a cyclone event, following its impact on Western Australia. The cyclone caused significant rain and flooding, prompting the initiation of a claims period. This event is part of the reinsurance pool aiming to lower insurance premiums in affected regions, supported by a government guarantee.

The Australian Reinsurance Pool Corporation (ARPC) has officially declared ex-Tropical Cyclone Dianne a cyclone event. This designation applies to the significant impact that Dianne had on various regions of Western Australia over the past weekend, as per the federal government’s reinsurance pool.

Dianne made landfall as a Category 1 tropical cyclone early Saturday on the Kimberley coast but subsequently weakened into a tropical low, as reported by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. The cyclone caused heavy rainfall and flooding, affecting both personal and commercial properties, along with infrastructure.

ARPC’s Chief Executive Officer, Christopher Wallace, confirmed that the cyclone was designated at 2:18 a.m. local time on Saturday, coinciding with the initiation of the claims period for the event. According to the reinsurance pool rules, coverage becomes active within 24 hours after the Bureau of Meteorology confirms the cyclone’s existence and its potential impact on Australia.

Dianne adds to the list of storms recognized under the Terrorism and Cyclone Insurance Act of 2003, joining Tropical Cyclone Isla in April and Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle earlier this February. The cyclone reinsurance pool was launched in July 2022 and is designed to provide coverage for household, strata, and small business insurance policies across Australia.

With a backing from a A$10 billion government guarantee, the ARPC operates this pool to help lower insurance premiums and enhance competition in cyclone-prone areas by eliminating profit margins. The initiative is expected to make more than 880,000 residential and small business policies in northern Australia eligible for coverage under this pool.

In summary, the declaration of ex-Tropical Cyclone Dianne as a cyclone event by the ARPC underscores the ongoing challenges faced by communities in Western Australia due to extreme weather. This event highlights the importance of the cyclone reinsurance pool, which aims to alleviate financial burdens for affected individuals and businesses, ensuring accessibility to affordable insurance coverage in cyclone-affected regions.
