Sergeant Abel Masava was shot dead in Bulawayo after stopping a group of five suspicious men. The incident occurred while he was responding to a domestic violence call. Masava’s death marks the second police officer fatality in the region within a month.

In Bulawayo, Sergeant Abel Masava was fatally shot after stopping a group of five men in the Sizinda suburb shortly after midnight on Friday. The police officer, who was dispatched to handle a domestic violence situation, approached the men to inquire about their identities as they were dressed in dark clothing and exhibited suspicious behavior.

According to police reports, one of the men drew a firearm and shot Sergeant Masava in the head. He was promptly transported to United Bulawayo Hospitals but was pronounced dead upon arrival. At the time of the incident, Masava was in full police uniform.

Prior to the shooting, Masava had accompanied another officer to a home in Sizinda following a report from a woman who alleged that her husband had assaulted her. While the other officer was attempting to gain entry into the house with the victim and her friend, Masava remained near the police vehicle.

Tragically, Sergeant Masava is the second police officer to lose his life in the line of duty in Bulawayo within a month. Earlier, on March 6, Detective Cassandra Hove was shot in Pumula South by a fellow officer, receiving a fatal wound that was originally intended for a robbery suspect.

The tragic incident involving Sergeant Abel Masava highlights the risks faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty, particularly in addressing domestic violence and maintaining public safety. This marks a significant loss for the police force, being the second fatality in just one month, pointing to the need for heightened security measures and support for police personnel.
