Significant Growth in Butter Supplies to Russia from Argentina and Uruguay

Russia’s butter imports from Argentina and Uruguay have surged, with Argentina’s supplies increasing 5.6 times and Uruguay’s doubling. Additionally, ice cream and cottage cheese imports are exclusively from Belarus, while onion and garlic imports rose significantly. Tomato imports are led by Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan, indicating notable growth in various agricultural supplies to Russia.

The Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision (Rosselkhoznadzor) has observed a remarkable rise in butter imports to Russia in early 2025. Supplies from Argentina surged 5.6 times, reaching 2,000 tonnes, while imports from Uruguay doubled to 1,000 tonnes compared to the previous year.

Additionally, the report reveals that all ice cream imports to Russia, totaling 2.1 thousand tonnes, are sourced from Belarus and Kazakhstan, with cottage cheese exclusively from Belarus, amounting to 16.6 thousand tonnes.

In contrast, imports of onions and garlic also witnessed significant growth, increasing 2.1 times to reach 77.8 thousand tonnes in the first months of 2025. Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan emerged as the leading suppliers of tomatoes, contributing 30 thousand tonnes and 28.7 thousand tonnes, respectively, accounting for a total of 124.9 thousand tonnes of tomato imports thus far this year.

In summary, Russia is experiencing a substantial increase in butter imports from Argentina and Uruguay, indicating a shift in its dairy supply sources. Furthermore, other dairy products, as well as onions, garlic, and tomatoes, are also seeing significant import increases from various countries, reflecting a growing diversification in Russia’s agricultural imports.
