North Korea has dispatched 3,000 additional troops to Russia to replenish battlefield casualties incurred against Ukrainian forces. High casualty rates among North Koreans are attributed to their lack of combat experience. Additionally, North Korea has provided military supplies to Russia as part of their alliance, reinforcing Russian efforts against Ukraine.

In recent developments, North Korea has reportedly sent an additional 3,000 soldiers to Russia to mitigate losses sustained in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, as per a statement from South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff on March 27. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated that North Korean troops engaged on the Russian side have experienced approximately 4,000 casualties, with a significant portion, roughly two-thirds, being fatalities.

Kyrylo Budanov, the chief of Ukraine’s military intelligence, suggested that the high casualty rate among North Korean forces is primarily due to their inexperience in combat, coupled with their strategy of employing human wave tactics despite facing equipment limitations. The report also highlighted North Korea’s provision of military supplies to Russia, including short-range ballistic missiles, 170 mm self-propelled howitzers, and 240 mm multiple rocket launchers.

Pyongyang’s military partnership with Moscow has strengthened, with North Korea offering artillery shells and troops, while receiving oil products and advanced rocket technology in return. Notably, in the previous fall, around 12,000 North Korean soldiers were deployed to Kursk Oblast, assisting Russian forces in countering a Ukrainian advance that had begun in August 2024, during which Ukrainian troops had seized control of 1,300 square kilometers of Russian territory.

In conclusion, North Korea’s military engagement in the Russo-Ukrainian conflict has intensified, with the recent deployment of additional troops aimed at countering significant battlefield losses. The collaboration between North Korea and Russia is evident in their exchange of military supplies and personnel. This situation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by both Ukrainian and Russian forces in this protracted conflict.
