Kiira Motors: Pioneering Electric Bus Manufacturing in Uganda

Kiira Motors Corporation, established in 2014 by Ugandan students and lecturers, is revolutionizing the automotive sector with the Kayoola electric bus. This bus is operational in Uganda and has garnered orders from several African nations. KMC aims to enhance production capacity while managing current imports of vehicle components.
In 2007, a group of students from a Ugandan university, alongside their lecturers, embarked on a journey to create the nation’s first automobile. With the backing of the government, this initiative led to the formation of Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC) in 2014. Today, KMC is significantly impacting the African automotive sector with various vehicle models, including the electric bus known as the Kayoola.
The Kayoola electric bus has gained traction not only in Uganda but has also been ordered by countries such as Tanzania, eSwatini, Nigeria, and South Africa. KMC envisions expanding its production capacity to fully manufacture every part of the vehicles it assembles. However, the company currently relies on importing several components necessary for vehicle production.
Kiira Motors Corporation stands as a testament to Uganda’s innovative spirit in the automotive industry. With the Kayoola electric bus setting a precedent in electric transportation across Africa, the company aims to enhance its manufacturing capabilities while currently navigating the challenges of component imports.
