U.S. and Russian officials are negotiating a ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict in Saudi Arabia, focusing initially on establishing a Black Sea ceasefire to enable shipping. This comes after successful discussions with Ukraine, led by U.S. officials, and aims to bring about a broader peace agreement.

Officials from the United States and Russia engaged in discussions in Saudi Arabia, aiming to advance a ceasefire agreement for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The U.S. seeks to establish a Black Sea ceasefire to facilitate unhindered maritime shipping, which will be a precursor to a broader ceasefire.

The talks followed “productive and focused” discussions between U.S. officials and Ukraine, led by national security advisor Andrew Peek and senior State Department official Michael Anton. They came against the backdrop of the three-year-long war as U.S. President Donald Trump intensifies efforts to cease hostilities in the region.

Recent dialogues between President Trump and both President Vladimir Putin of Russia and President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine resulted in a provisional agreement for a 30-day pause in attacks on energy infrastructure. Russia’s delegation in Saudi Arabia includes Grigory Karasin, the Federation Council’s foreign affairs committee chair, and Sergei Beseda, an advisor to the Federal Security Service’s director.

Prior talks with Ukraine involved Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, who stated, “The discussion was productive and focused — we addressed key points including energy.” He emphasized Ukraine’s commitment to achieving a just and lasting peace.

In a separate address, President Zelensky attributed the prolongation of the conflict to Russia, declaring, “No matter what we talk about with our partners, we need to push Putin to give a real order to stop the strikes: the one who brought this war must take it away.”

In summary, discussions between U.S. and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia aim to establish a ceasefire in Ukraine, with particular focus on a Black Sea ceasefire. This initiative follows recent dialogues resulting in a temporary truce agreement and reflects the ongoing efforts by international leaders to bring an end to the conflict, to which Ukraine insists must begin with substantive action from Russia.
