This initiative comes amid legal troubles for Mondlane, who disclosed having endured a ten-hour interrogation by prosecutors and being placed under judicial oversight two weeks ago.
Official results indicated that Chapo, affiliated with the long-standing Frelimo party, received 65% of the vote, with Mondlane following at 24%. However, Mondlane has contested these results, asserting he actually won 53% of the vote, and has since cultivated a movement that presents Frelimo’s most substantial political challenge in nearly five decades.
