Welsh driver Elfyn Evans secured a significant victory at the Safari Rally Kenya, reinforcing his lead in the World Rally Championship. This win marks his second consecutive victory, following his triumph in Sweden, placing him 36 points ahead of reigning champion Thierry Neuville after three of the fourteen rounds.
Kalle Rovanpera, a two-time champion, faced difficulties, retiring on Sunday morning due to an electrical issue, and is now 57 points behind Evans. Throughout the race, Evans showcased a strategic performance, successfully navigating the various challenges of the Safari Rally and concluding the final stage with a lead of one minute and nine seconds over Hyundai’s Ott Tanak.
Tanak’s teammate, Neuville, finished in third place, trailing by three minutes and thirty-two seconds. Evans expressed his pride in his team’s efforts, stating, “A huge well done to the team. They did a great job and I’m proud to be a very small part of Toyota’s history at this special rally. ” Meanwhile, Finland’s Sami Pajari finished fourth, and teammate Takamoto Katsuta encountered trouble, rolling his car on the final stage but managed to secure 10 points with the help of spectators.
The next event in the WRC calendar will occur at the end of April during the Rally of the Canary Islands, promising further lively competition.
