The police in Githunguri, Kiambu County, have apprehended two suspects linked to a criminal gang that has been targeting Uber drivers through violent confrontations and vehicle vandalism. The arrests occurred early Thursday at approximately 3 A.M. during a standard patrol along the Githunguri-Kiambu Road.

According to a report from the Githunguri Police Station, officers intercepted a suspicious Uber vehicle, a Toyota Passo, near Gathanji shopping center, around seven kilometers from the station. The car was driven by a 34-year-old driver who had picked up the two suspects after they requested a ride to Jamaica area in Githunguri.

Upon examining the vehicle and its occupants, police discovered various tools typically associated with vehicle vandalism and potential assaults. One suspect possessed an improvised strangling device, along with other tools such as a sisal rope, cobbler’s adze, and various hand tools believed to be used during attacks.

The second suspect was found with two national identification cards—one bearing his name and another belonging to an individual identified as Mr. Wayayi. He also had a smartphone used for booking the ride and a spanner, further raising police suspicions.

Authorities suspect that the duo has been masquerading as legitimate Uber customers, luring drivers to secluded areas before executing their predatory tactics. Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects remain in custody while police prepare for identification by other drivers previously victimized by this gang.

The recent arrests by the Githunguri police highlight a growing concern regarding the safety of Uber drivers in Kiambu County. Officers have uncovered disturbing evidence linking the suspects to a series of violent attacks, emphasizing the need for greater vigilance. As investigations progress, it is crucial for potential victims to report any incidents to assist in curbing such criminal activities.
