Surveillance footage shows Konanki alongside her friends and Riibe around 4:15 a.m., but the group returned to the hotel at 5:00 a.m. without her or Riibe. Currently, Riibe has been designated a person of interest, though he is not considered a suspect. In his statements to law enforcement, he indicated having met Konanki the previous night, claiming they had kissed in the ocean before being struck by a large wave.
Riibe stated that he rescued her from the water, after which Konanki left to retrieve her belongings. According to him, he began to feel unwell and fell asleep on the beach.
