National Geographic has launched a new series titled “DAVID BLAINE: DO NOT ATTEMPT,” featuring an episode filmed entirely in South Africa. The Walt Disney Company Africa hosted a launch event in Johannesburg, where around 100 attendees experienced a magical atmosphere complete with optical illusions and interactive exhibits, prior to previewing the episode. This six-part series showcases renowned magician David Blaine as he explores various cultures through magical performances.
In the South African episode, Blaine collaborates with local artists and performers including Muzi, Kayla, and Sam Sam. Muzi, as Blaine’s guide, contributed three songs and led the magician through South Africa during production, while Kayla and Sam Sam impressed the audience with a spectacular stunt performance. The episode captivated viewers with breathtaking feats that convey the theme of “Do Not Attempt.”
Before the screening, illusionist Wian Van Den Berg entertained guests with sleight-of-hand magic inspired by Blaine’s work, highlighting the latter’s influence on his own performances. Notable content creators in attendance included Adre Muller, Austin Macaskill, and others, enhancing the event’s creative dialogue.
Premiering on 28 March at 18:50 (CAT) on DStv 181 and Startimes 220, the series will also be accessible on Disney+ in South Africa. In this series, Blaine engages in cultural exchanges, visiting numerous regions including Brazil, India, and Japan, alongside meeting various performers who inspire his craft. He emphasizes that the astonishing acts are performed by trained professionals with close safety supervision, asserting that these should not be attempted by amateurs.
