As a key player in the European Union, Germany joins other member states in rekindling diplomatic relations with Syria. Italy had previously reopened its embassy last year, while Spain resumed its diplomatic presence following the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad.

Meanwhile, the militant group HTS gained control over Damascus on December 8, declaring the end of President Assad’s regime through a rapid offensive initiated from their stronghold in northwestern Syria. Following this territorial control, HTS leader Abu Muhammad Jolani, also known as Ahmad Sharaa, has proclaimed himself the interim president of Syria.
