The 2025 FIA WRC Safari Rally commenced with a shakedown in Naivasha, showcasing Kalle Rovanperä’s fastest time. Drivers voiced concerns regarding the challenging conditions of the rally. As they prepare for a tough competition, endurance and strategic navigation will be critical for success.

The 2025 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally shakedown was held on March 19 in Naivasha, marking the commencement of one of the most challenging legs in the motorsport circuit. Kalle Rovanperä of Toyota Gazoo Racing recorded the fastest time on the 5.4km Sleeping Warrior stage, narrowly ahead of competitors Thierry Neuville and Ott Tänak from Hyundai WRT. The official opening, which features a flag-off by President William Ruto, will occur in Nairobi before heading to Naivasha’s rugged landscape.

In recognition of the extreme challenges associated with the Kenyan rally, competitors have noted its notoriously harsh conditions, including treacherous roads and unpredictable weather coupled with deep fesh fesh (fine dust). Kalle Rovanperä expressed the ongoing challenge of maintaining the ‘King of Safari’ title and emphasized the importance of a steady pace and effectively managing the vehicle and tires. Thierry Neuville acknowledged previous struggles but expressed determination to break Toyota’s winning streak.

Ott Tänak reported no mechanical issues thus far but anticipated a demanding experience. Elfyn Evans stated that caution is essential due to the presence of loose rocks and fesh fesh, which adds difficulty to completing the rally. Carl Tundo, driving a Ford Fiesta WRC2, described the shakedown as rough and noted a conservative approach with the aim of a clean performance on Friday, adding that rain would be beneficial on Saturday.

With the shakedown successfully concluded, drivers are poised for a rigorous challenge on the historic Safari Rally course, which is anticipated to test the limits of both competitors and their vehicles. Endurance and strategic decision-making will be paramount for achieving success in this demanding rally.

The 2025 WRC Safari Rally is set to challenge competitors with its difficult terrain and unpredictable conditions. Key drivers have acknowledged the need for caution and strategy while preparing to uphold or break the tradition of success in this fiercely competitive event. With the rally officially commencing, the anticipation for an electrifying showdown increases among teams and fans alike.
