Armed Raid on Former Bank of Ghana Governor’s Home Raises Alarms in Ghana

In a shocking incident, Richard Jakpa led a raid on former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison’s home with 20 armed men. During the raid, Dr. Addison was present but informed the team that no vaults existed in his residence. Following a ransack that yielded no significant finds, the armed men left with surveillance equipment, leaving the Addison family traumatized.
Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, led a raid on the residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison on the morning of March 19, 2025. Approximately twenty armed individuals, some wearing balaclavas and wielding AK-47 rifles, conducted a search at Dr. Addison’s home located in Roman Ridge, Accra, while he was present.
Upon arrival, the team disabled the property’s CCTV surveillance system and demanded that Dr. Addison show them the “vaults” at his residence. In response, Dr. Addison informed them that no such vaults or caches of money existed in his home. Despite his denial, the security personnel proceeded to ransack the house without discovering any vaults or large sums of currency.
After the fruitless search, they took the CCTV monitor and control unit with them. A close associate revealed that Dr. Addison, alongside his family, has experienced significant trauma due to the ordeal. A retired senior official remarked, “This is the first time in the history of Ghana that such a thing is happening to a Governor of the Bank of Ghana. This is both scary and messy.”
This incident marks the second time Mr. Jakpa has conducted a raid on a prominent figure associated with the previous Akufo-Addo administration since President John Mahama took office on January 7, 2025. Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana’s longest-serving finance minister, was raided prior on February 10, 2025, where the entire operation was captured on CCTV and made public.
The raid on Dr. Ernest Addison’s home underscores a troubling trend of aggressive actions against former high-ranking officials in Ghana. Led by Richard Jakpa and heavily armed men, the incident has incited public concern over security and legality. The lack of reasonable cause and the aftermath of psychological distress on the Addison family call into question the conduct and motives behind such operations. The sentiment echoed by a former official highlights the unprecedented nature of this raid in Ghana’s history.
